VikingContact 8: New Peak of Winter Tires

In a surprise announcement, Continental introduced the VikingContact 8, a studless winter tire designed for the Scandinavian market. This newcomer is set to replace the highly acclaimed VikingContact 7, which is known for setting standards in the tire industry. With improvements in several key performance areas including sound comfort, fuel efficiency and driving experience, VikingContact 8 is poised to redefine the expectations of winter driving.

And expectations for the VikingContact 8 rose, thanks to its predecessor’s legacy as a class-leading tire. The success story of the VikingContact 7 includes the dominant Swedish tire testing in publications such as Vi Bilägare, Teknikens Värld and Aftonbladet, achieving top spots in 15 out of 18 tests since its debut in 2018. The new generation builds on this foundation with enhanced features that also promise better performance.

Per Linder, product manager for Continental’s Swedish division, expressed excitement about the launch. He highlighted the success of friction tires that have continued for so long and how eager the team is to see VikingContact 8 in the upcoming trials. The tire's development focused primarily on safety, incorporating a sophisticated tread pattern to provide exceptional grip in a variety of dry, wet, snow and ice conditions This design features "three-tier" sips at the shoulder sections to improve traction.

VikingContact 8 also features a special rubber compound that stores elastic strength at extremely low temperatures, providing excellent grip. This compound combined with a new tire tread prevents tire wear, reducing strength loss and rolling resistance. This means drivers can expect better fuel or electricity efficiency. Notably, the tires are optimized for noise reduction, a particular benefit for electric car owners looking to remain quiet. All tire sizes received an "A" for peak noise, and fuel economy ratings of "A" and "B."

The VikingContact 8 tire is uniquely designed to cater to the specific needs of electric vehicles. It features new sidewall markings that signify its suitability for electric vehicles, enabling drivers to enhance the efficiency and eco-friendliness of their vehicles without compromising on performance.
