Description
The Maxxis Premitra Ice 5 SUV is a studless ice and snow tire specifically designed for light trucks and SUVs. The tire is a part of the Nordic Winter series from Maxxis and replaces the earlier Maxxis Presa SUV SS-01 model.
Features & Benefits
- Innovative Compound: Made from a new SiRu silica rubber compound, the tire remains flexible even in low temperatures, allowing it to conform to uneven icy surfaces and thereby increasing the contact patch for improved traction and handling.
- V-Shaped Tread Pattern: Designed to improve vehicular control in various driving conditions, the tread pattern of this tire enhances overall performance.
- Wave-Shaped Sipes: The tread blocks contain multiple wave-shaped sipes that help improve traction on slippery surfaces. These sipes expand to absorb water from icy surfaces during contact and release the liquid when they leave the contact area.
- Significant Performance Improvements: According to tests conducted at the UTAC site in Ivalo, Finland, the Premitra Ice 5 SUV outperforms its predecessor in ice performance. Notably, the braking distance when decelerating from 25 to 5 km/h was reduced by more than 3 meters.
- Noise Reduction: The tire offers quieter performance compared to its predecessor, providing a more comfortable driving experience.
- Consistent Snow Performance: While ice performance has been notably enhanced, the tire's capabilities on snow have remained consistent with its predecessor.

Final Thoughts
The Maxxis Premitra Ice 5 SUV appears to be a strong contender in the winter tire market, particularly for drivers in regions with severe winter conditions. Its use of innovative compounds and tread designs, combined with favorable test results, make it a compelling option for those looking for improved ice performance without sacrificing comfort or noise levels.

What is good?
What is bad?
Got these Ice 5 SUV tires last July. I was really hoping theyd be good. Unfortunately, one of the tires had a noticeable wobble during balancing. The shop tried to fix it, but it took way too many weights to get it right. The tires are fresh, made in the 17th week of 2023, so I expected better. Im not too optimistic about how theyll perform this winter = I’m already disappointed.
What is good?
I took them up to 125 km/h and they were quiet and controlled the whole time. Even an emergency stop on ice didn't faze them. Considering the price, these tires are a fantastic deal, outperforming some of my previous European brands.

The tread pattern looks almost identical to the Conti Viking Contact 7, which influenced my decision. The rubber is soft and they a bit noisy on asphalt but nothing out of the ordinary. Looking forward to how they perform when winter really sets in, but so far, so good.
