Description

The Dunlop Winter Maxx 2 (WM02) is a studless ice and snow tire designed specifically for passenger cars across various classes. Introduced by Japanese Sumitomo in 2016, this second-generation friction winter tire is tailored to provide reliable traction on wet asphalt, snow, and especially icy surfaces. With its innovative design and materials, the Winter Maxx 2 offers both enhanced performance and longevity.

Features & Benefits

  • Enhanced Traction: The Winter Maxx 2 is known for its reliable grip on wet asphalt, snow, and icy surfaces. This is achieved through its advanced rubber compound and tread design.
  • Longevity: Made of innovative materials that retain their effectiveness throughout the tire's life cycle, the Winter Maxx 2 promises a longer service life.
  • Improved Braking: Compared to its predecessor, the Winter Maxx WM01, the WM02 offers 20% better traction on ice and more effective braking on icy roads, reducing the braking distance on ice by 12%.

Technologies

  • 4D-Nano-Design: This patented proprietary technology has enabled the creation of a rubber compound with increased resistance to aging, ensuring the tire remains effective on various winter surfaces throughout its operational life.
  • Advanced Rubber Compound: Incorporating biomass materials and silicon dioxide (silica), this compound increases grip and handling on ice by conforming tightly to micro-textures on the road surface.
  • Enhanced Tread Design: The improved tread design, coupled with a 17% increase in the number of sipes, contributes to the tire's superior traction on ice and snow.
  • Lasting Performance: Functional polymers are incorporated to maintain consistent performance throughout the tire's lifespan.

1 These tires are quite balanced for winter use. However, the main issue I encountered is their poor directional stability on wet roads during the off-season.

2 On icy roads, they perform adequately, but they struggle with traction on inclines when the ground is just slightly slippery.

I previously used Dunlop Graspic DS2 tires for six winters and two summers. They were incredibly durable but they lost elasticity over tim which affected snow and ice grip. Switching to the Winter Maxx WM02 was a great decision. They perform excellently on loose snow and slush and while they are a bit worse on ice, this is expected for non-studded tires. On dry and wet asphalt they float a bit, but its not critical.
