While working on the G005, Yokohama engineers took such popular tire models as the BFGoodrich Krawler KX and the Nitto Mud Grappler as performance samples. As a result, the mud traction, delivered by the Yokohama Geolandar X-MT, is 6-10% better than that of the Nitto Mud Grappler, and 4-8% better than that of the BFG Krawler KX. The Yokohama G005 Geolandar X-MT tread design, named “Rock Concept”, is extremely aggressive, and reminds the design of the Yokohama Mud Digger models of decades past. The perfect tread-to-void ratio ensures excellent grip and short stopping distance on wet pavement. Massive tread blocks with deep sipes help increase traction in mud and on loose surfaces, thus ensuring confident forward movement in any off-road conditions. The voids allow the tire to cling to the sharp rocky edges just like a rock climber’s fingers. The varied pitch of the Geolandar XMT tread increases the ride comfort on a highway without compromising any of the off-road performance. The heavy-duty tread compound ensures exceptional tire durability and better handling in long trips on rough terrain.

Each size of the Yokohama Geolandar X-MT G005 tire features three-ply Geo-Shield polyester sidewalls. The tread area is also securely protected by three polyester layers, two steel layers and one all-nylon layer. The biting and cutting edges of the tread blocks feature an extra rubber layer, which, just as the lugs on the sidewalls, is meant to increase the tire’s resistance to puncture. In addition, a closer look at the tire reveals a slightly raised “skirt” around each tread block. These extra sturdy rubber elevations are meant to prevent damage of the open void areas.
