Autobild: All-Season Tire Test R18 2026
AUTO BILD has wrapped a comprehensive all-season tyre audit in the popular 225/40 R18 size. Thirty retail-sourced models entered a braking pre-test, with the top 15 advancing to full evaluation. The programme covers dry and wet braking and handling, wet circle, straight and curved aquaplaning, snow braking/traction/handling, exterior noise, ride comfort, rolling resistance, abrasion, projected tread life and cost per 1,000 km. Pressures and temperatures were controlled and all results averaged over multiple runs. Reference summer and winter tyres were included for context.
A notable storyline this year is Michelin’s two-track strategy with the new CrossClimate 3 range (standard and Sport), reflecting different use-case priorities. The field spans established premium brands and aggressive budget challengers, offering a clear snapshot of the 225/40 R18 market for hot hatches and compact performance cars.

It stops decisively on dry asphalt, steers cleanly, and feels composed at speed. In heavy rain it’s a standout, clearing water confidently in a straight line and through sweepers, which keeps the car stable and easy to place. Snow manners are predictable with good cornering control and safe balance, even if ultimate bite under braking isn’t class-leading. Refinement is solid, rolling efficiency is mid-pack, and the main trade-off is wear rate and overall value versus price.

Steering response is crisp, balance stays neutral through linked corners, and wet braking feels reassuring. In snow it remains composed with strong traction and short, predictable stops—more secure than sporty. Refinement is good with low interior noise. The trade-offs: average aquaplaning reserves in curves, modest efficiency, and mileage that trails the best, which, paired with a high purchase price, dents overall value. 3PMSF certified; EU label C/B/71.

Steering is keen and confidence stays high as speeds rise, with tidy balance on dry roads and unusually strong winter capability for this class—traction builds cleanly, cornering stays composed, and control feels intuitive on packed snow. Everyday manners are polished and efficiency is excellent for a grippy all-weather tire. The trade-offs land in the rain where braking and agility lag the best, aquaplaning reserves are only mid-pack, and projected mileage and running cost sit on the high side for frequent drivers. 3PMSF certified; EU label B/A/72.

In heavy rain it feels planted and predictable, with confident turn-in, short stops, and strong resistance to both straight-line and curved aquaplaning. Day-to-day refinement is a plus thanks to low exterior noise. The trade-offs show on snow—traction and braking lack bite—and on dry tarmac where stopping distances and lap pace trail the leaders. Efficiency and longevity are also merely average, tempering its otherwise secure all-round road manners. (225/40 R18 92V, 3PMSF.)

It nails emergency stops on dry asphalt and stays composed in quick transitions. In rain it brakes confidently and clears water well both straight and through sweepers, delivering steady, predictable control. Winter is its compromise: grip on packed snow is serviceable but not sharp, with longer stops and slower traction off the line. Refinement is mixed—comfort is good, but exterior noise is elevated—and efficiency sits mid-pack despite respectable wear.

It launches cleanly, bites hard under braking, and flows through snowy corners with the assurance of a dedicated winter tire. Day to day it feels composed and durable—high mileage potential and efficient rolling keep costs in check. The compromise is rain: braking stretches, agility fades, and aquaplaning reserves sit mid-pack. Dry pace and stopping are adequate rather than sharp. For cold regions with regular snowfall, it’s a confident, long-lasting choice.

On snow it hooks up cleanly, stays composed through the handling loop, and gives reassuring traction out of slower corners. Straight-line aquaplaning resistance is solid and road noise is pleasantly low for this size. The compromises show on rain-soaked and dry tarmac: braking stretches, steering precision fades in quick transitions, and overall pace trails the front group. Rolling resistance is on the higher side, which dents efficiency and value for money.

· All Season · 2025 · Passenger - Premium Touring All-Season68 33Verdict:Price Dry Braking Dry Handling Snow Handling Snow Traction Rolling Resistance Noise Straight Aquaplaning Wet Braking Wet Handling Lateral Aquaplaning Snow Braking TreadwearLinglong Sport Master 4S is a fair-weather biased all-season. On dry tarmac it reacts promptly, holds a clean line, and stops with conviction—easy to place through quick transitions for the money. In the rain the edge softens: pace is workable but agility and braking lag the front group, and standing water erodes confidence sooner both straight and across sweepers. Snow exposes the limitation—longer stops, muted traction, and cautious cornering. Efficiency also trails due to higher rolling effort, and refinement is only mid-pack. Best suited to mild climates where dry grip per euro matters more than true four-season versatility.
