More than a 100 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Continental AG staged a presentation of its new winter tire model, Continental WinterContact TS 870, designed to be installed on small to midsize passenger cars. The new model of the season 2020/2021 came to replace two models at once: WinterContact TS 850 (launched on the retail market in 2012) and the 2016 model WinterContact TS 860. The predecessors won numerous awards in the comparative tire tests conducted by European industry publications.
Initially, the new Continental winter tires will appear on the market in 21 sizes with fitting diameters ranging from 14 to 17 inches, and in 2021 the model range will be expanded with 51 more options.
The tire maker emphasizes that Europe shows a large demand for winter tires designed to be installed on midsize, compact, and subcompact cars. For example, in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland alone, during the period from 2017 to 2019, about 25 million of such tires were sold. Furthermore, in these three countries, three fitting sizes — 205/55 R16, 195/65 R15, and 185/65 R15 — account for a quarter of the total sales volume of winter tires from this manufacturer.
It will be possible to install WinterContact TS 870 in its smallest size on VW up! As for the compact and sports cars, the new winter friction tires from Continental are likely to interest the owners of such cars as Citroen C4 and VW Golf, as well as BMW 1 and 3 series.
Compared to the tires of previous generations, the Continental WinterContact TS 870 model got improvements in all of the areas of its performance from 2% to 7%. Special attention was paid to maximizing the driving safety on snow, ice, wet pavement, as well as to increasing the expected mileage and reducing the rolling resistance, which was achieved by optimizing the tread design and upgrading the compound formula.
