The Continental TrueContact Tour 54 won this test by leading wet braking, wet handling, subjective wet handling, dry handling and subjective dry handling, while sharing the best comfort score and returning the lowest fuel use. It was only mid-field in straight aquaplaning and third of five in the snow tests, so it is not a snowy-climate choice. Its short warranty in this size also drops it toward the bottom on cost per warranted mile.

The Dunlop Blue Response AS finished second and impressed as a first all-season touring tire, leading dry braking, value and measured noise while ranking second only to the Continental for subjective dry handling. It also had the best snow performance behind the Bridgestone. Its one clear flaw is straight aquaplaning, where it was last, with wet braking and wet handling behind the leading pair.

The Goodyear Assurance MaxLife 2 finished third as the most relaxed tire in the test, second only to the Continental in wet braking, wet handling and dry handling. It shared the highest comfort score and was the pick for subjective noise. Snow braking and traction were last, and its steering is soft off-centre and slow to build turning force.

The Bridgestone Turanza EverDrive finished fourth as the most specialised tire, best in snow braking and traction by a wide margin and second in straight aquaplaning. Everywhere else it paid: last in wet and dry braking, lowest subjective handling scores, and the firmest ride of the five. Buy it for the climate, not the lap time.

The Michelin Defender 2 finished fifth but remains recommended in this premium group. It led straight aquaplaning by a clear margin, had competitive dry handling and the crispest steering, but it gave up grip in every condition: slowest wet handling lap, understeer that takes time to recover, weak snow results and the highest cost per warranted mile.
