Auto Bild 2024-2025: All-Season Tire Test R16 Qualifying

All-season tires promise year-round performance without the hassle of seasonal changes. But can they truly handle every weather condition? Auto Bild, a leading authority in automotive testing, has initiated its comprehensive all-season tire evaluation for 2024. While the final verdict is still pending, the preliminary qualifying results are already available.

Many drivers are opting for all-season tires to save on the costs and inconvenience of maintaining separate sets for summer and winter. However, safety remains paramount. As the critical link between your vehicle and the road, tires must deliver reliable performance in all conditions.

To determine which tires live up to their promises, Auto Bild conducts annual tests on all-season models. The latest assessment is underway, highlighting both the top performers and those that fell short in the qualifying round.

Qualifying Round Results

This time, 37 tires in the 225/50 R17 size, commonly equipped on midsize vehicles, were put to the test. While the full assessment is still in progress, the qualifying results are now available.

To efficiently identify the top performers, each tire underwent a braking test on both dry and wet surfaces. The combined braking distances determined the initial rankings, with only the top fifteen all-season tires advancing to the full test.

Topping the qualifying round is the Bridgestone Turanza AllSeason 6 (98V), delivering impressive braking distances of 50.5 meters on wet roads and 36.8 meters on dry surfaces. While it doesn't quite match the performance of the summer tires tested (wet: 45.6 meters, dry: 34.9 meters), it significantly outperforms the winter tires (wet: 54.7 meters, dry: 42.3 meters).

Not all all-season tires met expectations. The seven lowest-ranked models fell short, and AUTO BILD does not recommend them for purchase. Leading the pack of underperformers is the Royal-Black Royal A/S II (98W), which requires 82.1 meters to stop on wet roads—nearly 32 meters longer than the Bridgestone. Fortunately, in dry conditions, the difference narrows to approximately seven meters.
