Auto Express: Summer Tire Test R18 2025

Auto Express: Summer Tire Test R18

Auto Express carried out its 2025 summer tire test on the 225/40 R18 size — one of the most popular fitments for performance hatchbacks and mid-size cars. It’s been three years since the last evaluation of this size, and this time the field was stronger and more up-to-date, with new and refreshed models entering the competition.

The lineup featured premium and mid-range contenders including Bridgestone Potenza Sport, Continental SportContact 7, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, Michelin Pilot Sport 5, Pirelli P Zero (PZ5), Hankook Ventus Evo K137, Kumho Ecsta Sport PS72, Yokohama Advan Sport V107, and the budget Ceat SportDrive.

All tires were independently purchased from the open market to ensure real-world accuracy. Testing was conducted on a Volkswagen Golf GTI, with evaluations covering dry braking and handling, wet performance, aquaplaning resistance, noise comfort, and rolling resistance. Auto Express placed the greatest emphasis on wet grip — accounting for 50% of the overall score — followed by dry performance at 40%, with the remaining 10% covering noise and fuel efficiency.

Each tire carried a Y speed rating (186 mph), XL load index (92Y), and EU label grades mainly between C–D for rolling resistance and A for wet grip. Testing included controlled wet braking from 50 mph, dry braking from 62 mph, circuit handling laps, and detailed cabin noise measurements across different surfaces.

This latest Auto Express test highlights the steady evolution of 18-inch UHP summer tires — offering sharper precision, shorter braking distances, and better wet control than previous generations, providing valuable insight for drivers choosing new performance rubber for the 2025 season.

    Verdict:

The Bridgestone Potenza Sport secures second place with a commanding performance in wet conditions and remarkable consistency across all categories. Its wet braking is best-in-class, stopping nearly a meter shorter than any rival, setting a new benchmark for control and confidence in the rain. The tire remains agile and composed in wet handling, though slightly cautious when faced with deep standing water, reflected in its lower curved aquaplaning result. On dry tarmac, the Potenza Sport matches the Pirelli with the fastest lap time, showcasing sharp grip and precise directional stability through every corner. Braking is equally strong, landing a close second overall, while cabin noise remains well-controlled. Despite higher rolling resistance, this tire impresses with predictable, high-performance behavior that makes it one of the most complete sports tires available today.

    Verdict:

The Hankook Ventus Evo impressed with its poised wet performance and refined manners, earning a strong third place overall. While it didn’t claim any outright victories, it consistently placed near the top in key wet tests. Just a meter off the best in wet braking, it delivered excellent control and balance on the wet handling track, offering smooth grip transitions and predictable traction. Its agility and throttle adjustability made it easy to hold the perfect racing line, with lap times only fractions behind the leaders. It also excelled in aquaplaning resistance, taking second in both straight and curved tests. On dry roads, performance was solid but less dominant, lacking the sharp bite and traction of the top contenders. Sixth in dry braking and seventh in handling, it required a steadier approach to achieve precision. Yet, what sets the Ventus Evo apart is refinement — low cabin noise, excellent ride comfort, and quiet composure over rough surfaces make it one of the most civilized high-performance tires in the group.

    Verdict:

The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 continues its reputation as a refined, precise, and efficient performance tire, securing fourth place with a balanced and predictable character. It dominated both aquaplaning tests, taking first place in straight and curved water resistance — an outstanding achievement for real-world wet safety. Third in wet braking and cornering, it proved stable, confident, and composed in fast transitions, though its wet handling lap time didn’t fully capture its smooth and assured feel. On dry tarmac, it remained composed and easy to drive, though ultimate grip and traction were below the top performers. Its high-quality feedback makes it rewarding behind the wheel, even when numbers fall short. Cabin noise is higher than ideal, but this is offset by excellent fuel efficiency and durability. A sophisticated, well-rounded tire that prioritizes balance, control, and efficiency.

    Verdict:

The Kumho Ecsta Sport PS72 made an impressive debut, proving that refinement and value can coexist with dynamic performance. Despite weak results in wet braking and aquaplaning resistance, the tire shone on the wet handling track — composed, stable, and accurate, setting the fourth-fastest lap time. Traction was strong, allowing precise balance adjustments and confidence through fast transitions. The story was similar in dry conditions: braking performance lagged behind, but on the handling circuit, the PS72 was quick, predictable, and grippy once pushed to its sweet spot. Its standout trait is refinement — the quietest tire on test, effortlessly smoothing sharp impacts and surface irregularities. Combined with excellent rolling efficiency, the PS72 offers both comfort and economy without sacrificing driving enjoyment.

    Verdict:

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 remains a confident and capable performer, delivering balanced handling and dependable traction in all conditions, though it faced tougher competition this time around. In the wet, it demonstrated strong consistency — third in straight aquaplaning and fourth in cornering — while maintaining stability and composure through transitions. It demanded careful throttle modulation to manage grip, but rewarded smooth inputs with predictable balance and quick lap times close to the leaders. In dry testing, it continued its steady form, showing solid braking and handling, though without the razor-sharp response of the most focused competitors. The Asymmetric 6 also benefits from efficient rolling resistance, though it produces higher cabin noise and some firmness over rough patches. Overall, a well-rounded, trustworthy performance tire that still excels in real-world driving.

    Verdict:

The Yokohama Advan Sport V107 impressed with its strong dry-road capability, competing closely with Europe’s best. It delivered the shortest dry braking distance in the test, stopping nearly a meter ahead of the next competitor, and secured a top-four result in dry handling. The tire feels grippy, composed, and precise once pushed, though it requires assertive steering to extract its full potential. In wet testing, it performed respectably but lacked the traction and mid-corner stability of the leaders, finishing mid-pack across most categories. Third place in curved aquaplaning highlighted its ability to maintain stability in deeper water, while cabin comfort was generally good aside from sharp impacts. The downside is its high rolling resistance — the least economical tire in the group — but for dry-weather drivers prioritizing grip and control, the Advan Sport V107 delivers a genuinely sporty, responsive feel.

    Verdict:

The Continental SportContact 7 remains a high-quality performance tire, defined by razor-sharp dry handling and precision, even if it trails the best in this exceptionally competitive test. On dry roads, it’s outstanding — delivering strong, stable grip and excellent braking, placing equal second in dry braking and third in dry handling. Its steering response is crisp, and traction exiting corners inspires real confidence, allowing clean, composed laps with minimal effort. However, in wet conditions, it struggled to match its rivals, taking longer to stop and feeling unsettled on standing water where others stayed more planted. Mid-pack aquaplaning resistance and a modest noise score rounded out a result that’s solid but not class-leading. Still, the SportContact 7 remains a tire for enthusiasts who value steering precision, stability, and control above all else.

    · Summer · 2022 · Passenger - Ultra High Performance Summer
    Verdict:

The Ceat SportDrive entered the test as an unknown quantity and left it as a tire defined by extremes — refined and efficient, yet severely lacking in wet performance. In wet braking, it took more than six meters longer to stop than the best, with similarly poor results in wet handling and traction. Steering felt light and disconnected, requiring delicate inputs just to maintain stability. On dry surfaces, it delivered only marginally better results, finishing last in braking and handling, struggling for grip out of tighter corners. Despite these shortcomings, the Ceat impressed with low cabin noise and the best rolling resistance of all tested tires, making it surprisingly economical. However, given its high price and weak performance in critical safety metrics, the SportDrive offers poor value compared to far more capable competitors.
