Auto Bild: Winter Tire Test R18 2026

Auto Bild: Winter Tire Test R18

Auto Bild’s test team put the big-selling winter size 225/40 R18 under the microscope for sporty compacts like VW Golf GTI, Audi S3, Hyundai i30 N and the BMW M135i used as the benchmark car. Tires were bought from the open market, with a 51-model field trimmed to a finalists’ group via qualifying on snow and wet braking.

Snow work ran in Arvidsjaur, Sweden under real winter conditions (traction, lateral grip, braking, handling). Wet and dry testing moved to the Contidrom in Wietze (rail-guided wet braking, aquaplaning straight/curved, wet/dry handling, precision and stability). The lab phase covered rolling resistance, wear on a dedicated rig, and cabin noise, so buyers see both safety margins and cost per kilometre.

It offers good grip and stable handling on dry surfaces, giving confident control in mild winter conditions and representing solid value for money.
